Savinho Career

Savinho started his career at Athletico Mineiro in 2018. He signed his first professional contract as an athlete in June 2020. He agreed to a 3-year contract at the club. His release clause was €60 million.

Fast forward to September of that year, Savio made his professional debut as a footballer. However, he played for only ten minutes. Athletico Mineiro won the match 4-3. Two years later, in May 2022, he scored his first goal as a professional. He opened the scoring in a 2-1 victory over Independiente del Valle.

After reduced playtime at the club, he moved to Troyes. However, this was when Manchester City bought him from Athletico Mineiro. He was sent on loan to Troyes. After some time at Troyes, he was loaned to PSV.

July 2023 would be one of the most treasured dates for Savinho. Savio made his move to Girona. Although, this was another loan move facilitated by his parent club, City Football Group. This season shone his quality to the world.

He finished the season with double figures. Savinho created 10 assists and had 10 goals in 37 matches. Additionally, he had the most successful dribbles in the whole of Laliga. This was the same league that had seasoned dribblers like Vinicius, Yamal, Rodrygo, and Nico Williams. He was so impressive and he gained attention from the top clubs in Europe.

Manchester City was one of the clubs that was interested in the Brazilian wonderkid. However, in July 2024, they secured his signing. They paid a transfer fee worth £30.8 million.

International Career

Sávio scored four goals as a participant in the Brazil U15 squad that won the South American U-15 Championship in 2019. Additionally, he received a call-up to the FIFA U-20 World Cup team for 2023. In Brazil’s 6-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in the group stage, he scored one goal.

Brazil were victorious from their group, but Israel eliminated them in the quarterfinals. In March 2024, Savinho received his first call-up to the senior team. He was invited to play the friendlies against England and Spain. However, he only played in the friendly against England.

The match ended 1-0 in favor of the Brazilian National Team. In June 2024, he scored his first goal for his country. He scored in a 4-1 victory against Paraguay.

Savinho Biggest Strength

Savinho’s biggest strength is his ability to take on defenders. He is very good in one versus one dribble. He is blessed with quick feet that can confuse his markers. Of course, as a Brazilian he makes his dribbles entertaining to watch. Unlike other Brazilian wingers, Savinho is a different breed, how?

Wingers like Rodrygo, Vinicius and Raphinha are forwards that attack the 18-yard box. They try to get the better of defenders in the box. However, Savinho is quite different. He is more interested in creating space for his teammates who are in better positions. He stays just next to the touchline allowing him to take on his marker one-on-one. This would help him create a goal-scoring opportunity.

Also, Savio thrives in a team that holds possession. So, when he owns the ball, he is a big threat. Savinho is lethal when he is asked to create opportunities for his teammates rather than scoring. Savinho’s playmaking skills have been rated to be one of the best in Laliga.

Savinho’s Idols

Savinho is one of the players who models his play after great footballers. In an interview with Laliga TV, he stated that he idolized Ronaldinho when growing up. Savio admired his dribbling ability saying he was ‘crazily good’. He also said he loved Ronaldo Nazario stating that his goal-scoring ability was second to none.

Recently, he has expressed his love for Rodrygo, the Real Madrid forward. He stated that currently, he feels happy playing with the forward in the national team. Savio also hilariously stated that he feels shy talking to the Real Madrid forward.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Savinho is one of the prospects to look out for in the 2024/25 season in the English Premier League, and in Europe. He has an interesting career development. Also, he took up the number 26 jersey in honor of his lookalike Riyad Mahrez.

He is also similar to the Algerian in that both players use their left foot. Hopefully, he will replicate what Mahrez did for Manchester City. Indeed, he’s the future and will likely do well in the forward with Haaland, Foden, and Doku in Man City.
